Choosing The Perfect Colours For Your Home

One of the hardest things to do when revamping your home is to make those final colour decisions! With so much interior inspiration out there it can be easy to feel overwhelmed with choice….and what feels true to you and your tastes, and what is relevant to YOUR space can get a bit lost in all the (rather beautiful) noise.

If you are feeling swayed by several design options and are stuck on making some firm colour decisions for your project, these top tips might just help:

  1. Start With Your Wardrobe

It takes but a few minutes to look through your wardrobe full of clothes and see what colours are dominant in your fashion choices! And most likely, if you feel comfortable wearing it, you will feel comfortable with living in it too.

2. Take A Look At Your Overall Style

Are you someone who likes to stick with neutrals, plains or earthy tones? Do you love colourful patterns, vintage finds or are you a full on, colour clashing, bright as it comes kinda human? The styles and environments you are drawn to lend themselves to certain colour tones and palettes, so choose colours that lend themselves to your own style personality – again, this will help you to create a home environment that matches the style that reflects who YOU are. You might love the super funky bright inspo pics from Pinterest but it doesn’t necessarily mean you want to live in it!

3. Always Get Samples

Your best friend might have just redecorated with what you think is your perfect colour scheme. But, just because it worked in their home, unfortunately it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work in yours. The way your house works with the light (is your house north/east/south/west facing?), the height of your windows/ceilings and any other pre-decided decor items (think flooring, sofas, things you won’t be changing etc) might mean that the colour that worked in their house just doesn’t look quite right in yours. Getting samples of the colours you wish to use and painting them on to sheets of paper allows you to move them around the room and see how they look in different lights and at different times of day. Live with them on the walls for a good few days to make sure the colour feels right and works for you!

4. Company Suggestions

Many paint companies now suggest which other shades from their range work well with a chosen paint colour. So, if perhaps you already know your main colour but want to choose complimentary colours to go with it, the paint company website might be a great place to find relevant, useful suggestions without leading you too much down a design rabbit hole. Graham & Brown have absolutely nailed this and are a great company for getting curated palette ideas!

5. Maybe…..Just Go For It?!

Sometimes we can end up feeling so confused and unsure and the more colours we try and look at, the more we feel clueless at which one is right. If you find yourself in this place….maybe it’s time to go with your gut, choose the one you are most drawn to (even if you’re not 100% sure it will ‘work’ in your space) and just give it a go. Most likely, you know yourself better than you thought and the colour that felt right really was the right one! And if not…..it’s only paint, it can always be painted over with a new shade!! Even when we DO think we’ve got the right shade, it can sometimes not feel right once the painting has started. So make the best choice you can, consider ‘the rules’, but also remember the rules don’t actually mean anything….if you genuinely love it and it feels right to you, then it is absolutely the right colour for your space!
